Hong Kong’s Centre for Meals Security (CFS) of the Meals and Environmental Hygiene Division introduced final week that in view of a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Well being (WOAH) about outbreaks of extremely pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in areas in Canada and Poland, poultry imports have been suspended. Poultry meat and merchandise, together with eggs, have been suspended with a view to defend public well being in Hong Kong, the authorities stated. 

The suspension applies to Drummond Regional County Municipality of Quebec Province and Essex County of Ontario Province in Canada, and Koniński District of Wielkopolskie in Poland.

A CFS spokesperson stated that in accordance with the Census and Statistics Division, Hong Kong imported about 270 tonnes and about 3,110 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from Canada and Poland respectively final yr.

“The CFS has contacted the Canadian and Polish authorities over the problems and can intently monitor info issued by the WOAH and the related authorities on the avian influenza outbreaks. Acceptable motion shall be taken in response to the event of the scenario,” the spokesmperson stated.
