Three business meat turkey flocks in Missouri have been contaminated with extremely pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

America Division of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Well being Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that the presence of HPAI was confirmed on three premises in Dallas County on February 21.

The biggest of the three flocks had 31,000 turkeys whereas the smallest flock had 12,300 turkeys concerned. Collectively, 71,800 birds have been misplaced. In accordance with the Missouri Division of Agriculture, all three flocks have been depopulated.

Before now, Missouri had not had any confirmed instances of HPAI in 2024. The state’s final case was confirmed on November 14, 2023, in Jasper County, with 29,300 turkeys concerned. Missouri misplaced two flocks and 45,900 head of economic poultry to the virus in 2023. In 2022, the state misplaced eight flocks and 469,300 birds because of HPAI infections. Nevertheless, before now, Dallas County had not had any HPAI infections through the 2022-24 avian influenza outbreak.

Thus far in 2024, 9 states have had HPAI infections in business poultry and/or business gamebird operations. Kansas has had the most with 5, whereas California has had 4, and with these three turkey flocks concerned, Missouri has had three. North Carolina and South Dakota have each had two flocks affected, whereas Colorado, Nebraska, Indiana and Wisconsin have every had one.

In Canada, three provinces have had business poultry flocks affected by HPAI. Quebec has had two flock infections, whereas Ontario and Alberta have every had one.
